some tentative dutch master copies..the portrait (from the incomparable frans hals) was more careful obviously; the two harbor scenes were more explorations of the colors and compositions from van ruisdael.  need to remember to do more of these...and maybe work larger when studying frans hals.

Halloween!

once again, nothing solid planned for halloween...might go to a haunted house/wedding party, might go watch the cabinet of dr. caligari at the symphony..or then again we might well just stay home and not do anything.

in any case, i enjoyed painting this, though i managed to creep myself out a bit in the process.

these were all 20 minutes of not really knowing what i was doing

i ran out of ultramarine right before i started this (below), which limited my palette even further and forced me to reverse the primary and secondary light sources. so, all in all a happy accident.

this was on hot press paper...oof - a harsh mistress!

these turned out way better than they had any right to. watercolor and gouache 1, 2, and 5 minute poses.  i went back in a little later to hit up the darkest darks as well as a little color variation (otherwise everything was too wet).
